About DKD

8 Greenhorn Panorama

For over forty years, practitioners have come to know Dorje Khyung Dzong (“Indestructible Garuda Fortress”) as an ideal place for solitary meditation retreat. DKD is secluded on four hundred acres of mountain forest in southern Colorado at an altitude of 8200 feet. Eight secluded cabins provide the quiet and privacy of a solitary retreat for those who seek to deepen their spiritual practice through meditation.

Dorje Khyung Dzong was founded in 1972 by meditation master and scholar Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Two senior practitioners function as resident directors/caretakers. While many of the retreatants who come here are meditators within Shambhala, more than a third are from other Buddhist or contemplative traditions where they have established a strong, daily practice of meditation.

DKD sits on the slope of Greenhorn Mountain overlooking the Huerfano Valley and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of southern Colorado. In summer, wildflowers decorate the fields. Autumn skies are the bluest blue and create the perfect backdrop for golden aspens and bright red oaks. Snow covered mountains and fresh mountain air make winter retreats popular with many people who return each year to the warmth of a wood fire in their cabin.

The Huerfano Valley remains a very rural area with small cattle and horse ranches. Bordered on two sides by a road-less wilderness area of the San Isabel National Forest, DKD provides a pristine and tranquil environment that is ideal for meditation and spiritual development. Deer, elk, bobcat and other familiar forest dwellers such as foxes, chipmunks, squirrels and many species of birds make their home here along with a few, but rarely seen, black bears.

Retreatants must be a participant in an established spiritual community and have specific guidelines on retreat from their spiritual teacher or guide. To preserve the isolation and quite, DKD does not offer group programs and has no guest facilities. For more information, or to schedule your retreat, please contact us.
